Based in London, Lancastrian soprano ANGELA HICKS is a versatile singer, experienced in opera, oratorio, theatre, medieval, renaissence, chamber music and recitals with organ, piano and lute. 

 

Since embarking on her musical career, she has performed internationally, and has established herself as a specialist in the baroque repertoire. 

She is featured singing Purcell’s ‘Musick for a while’ in the film 'The Favourite', directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, alongside Emma Stone and Rachael Weisz. 

 

Angela is a member of a number of leading UK ensembles including The Monteverdi Choir, directed by John Eliot Gardiner, with which she now sings regularly, both as a soloist and as part of the choir. She is also a member of Ex Cathedra (Jeffrey Skidmore), Dowland Works (Emma Kirkby) and Joglaresa (Belinda Sykes).

 

Operatic highlights include the role of Cupid in John Eliot Gardiner’s production Handel’s Semele, performed at La Scala, Milan; La Statue in Rameau’s Pygmalion as part of Brighton Early Music Festival, and the chorus of Monteverdi’s Orfeo, in London’s Albert Hall, as well as around Europe and America.

 

She has sung as a soloist (Bach - Matthew Passion and cantatas with John Eliot Gardiner, John Passion with Jeffrey Skidmore) in some of the foremost concert venues in the UK and Europe, such as La Scala -  Milan, The Wigmore Hall - London, Palau de la Musica - Barcelona, Alter Oper - Frankfurt, De Oosterpoort - Netherlands, Berlin Philharmonie, Philharmonie im Gasteig - Munich, Wiener Konzerthaus, Royal Chapel - Palace of Versailles, National Forum of Music - Poland, Barbican Centre - London, St John’s - Smith Square and Birmingham Symphony Hall.

 

In 2016, she sang in a solo recording of Bach cantata BWV 151, and in 2018 she recorded Cupid’s aria from Semele, both with the Monteverdi Choir’s record label Soli Deo Gloria. 

 

Angela is co-founder of early music duo, Fair Oriana, alongside fellow soprano Penelope Appleyard, with whom she is building a flourishing portfolio of concerts and recordings.
